Today: May 15 @ Noon “Status Conference – NOPD Consent Decree”

Dear community member:

As you may know, the United States continues to work with the City of New Orleans on the implementation of the Consent Decree concerning the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD).  We appreciate the importance to the community of the Consent Decree’s remedies for effective, constitutional law enforcement.

Next Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Noon CT, the U.S. District Court will conduct a status conference as part of the Court’s ongoing oversight of the case.  In the attached order, the Court provides a new way to access the Court proceeding telephonically for those who cannot attend in person:

“Audio of the hearing will be broadcast to the public.  Members of the public may listen to the hearing by dialing (504) 229-4460 and entering the Phone Conference ID: 148 804 372#.”

We anticipate that the status conference will address, among other things, the City’s compliance with Consent Decree provisions about bias free policing.  We invite you and members of your organization to observe the proceedings in person or to listen via telephone.

Thank you.

Los Trabajadores Debian Salarios > Workers Owed Wages (WOW) Website

Los Trabajadores Debian Salarios

Karla,

  • Thank you for posting the information on the Dept of Labors Spanish timekeeping app on the Latino Forum Blog.  Can you also post this email on your blog?  It pertains to how workers can check to see if they are owed back wages from investigations the Wage & Hour Division (WHD) has completed.
  • Workers can use the QR code and weblink to access the Los Trabajadores Debian Salarios > Workers Owed Wages (WOW) website.
  • Workers can view the instructions in either English or Spanish.
  • If we find violations during an investigation, the employer is required to pay the back wages directly to the workers that it can locate but if there are unlocated workers the employer is required to turn over their back wages to the WHD.  We then attempt to locate those workers for 3 years but if we cannot locate them in that timeframe, we are required to send the money to the U.S. Treasury.
  • Any worker can search Los Trabajadores Debian Salarios to see if they are owed back wages and if they find their name on the website, they can submit a claim to receive the money. This information is in Spanish in the screenshot below.  Thank you, Stuart Smith, New Orleans District Office, Community Outreach & Resource Planning Specialist (CORPS).
