U.S.C.I.S: Spanish-language Enlace Session May 20th

On Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Eastern), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will conduct a national Spanish-language Enlace session as part of an ongoing series of quarterly public engagements. This free session is an opportunity for Spanish-speakers to engage with us in their own language.

During the Enlace, we will provide agency updates and answer your questions about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). USCIS representatives will be available for participants to discuss regulations, policies, operations, and forms, but will not offer legal or case-specific advice.

The event will be broadcast live from USCIS Headquarters and you can participate by:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy upcoming Free Immigration Legal Clinic on May 30th

Dear Justice Community:

The Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy (GCCLP) is still seeking volunteers for its upcoming Immigration Legal Clinic. This is a great way to get pro bono hours free and clear of lingering cases. It is also a great way for new practitioners to learn about the DACA..

FREE DACA LEGAL CLINIC: GCCLP is hosting a DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) Immigration Legal Clinic on May 30, 2015 from 10AM-3PM at Iglesia de Dios de Getsemani Church (2701 Transcontinental Blvd, Metairie, LA).

At this legal clinic, 50 pre-registered youth from the GNO area will be screened for immigration benefits. Eligible participant will complete the application process with GCCLP staff and trained volunteers. The clinic will also provide basic intake interviews for parents of US citizen children that qualify for DAPA. Interested participants must register by e-mailing Ada Marin Allen at ada@gcclp.org or calling (985) 788-7917.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER: We are seeking volunteers to commit a two hour shift (See chart below).

Legal Service Providers: (Attorneys/ law students/ paralegals) will help conduct comprehensive intake interviews and document completion. A one-hour training session will be held the morning of the clinic (Saturday, May 30, 2015) from 9AM-10AM on site. Please note: this training session is required for all legal service providers.

Translators/Interpreters: (Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic speakers) will assist legal service providers in completing intake, document completion and translate official documents (e.g. birth certificates). A one-hour training session will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 10AM-11AM at the clinic site. A small travel stipend will be offered to cover the costs of training. Please note: this training session is required for all translators.

Notaries-Public: (LA) will notarize sworn statements.

General Volunteers: (Community leaders/ service groups) will help register applicants, provide station set up/clean up and support the non-legal aspects of the clinic.

Ochsner Cancer Institute & the American Cancer Society: Krewe of Hope, June 7th

Good Afternoon,

June 7th is National Cancer Survivor’s Day. National Cancer Survivor’s Day is an annual Celebration of Life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide and around the world.

Ochsner Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society invite cancer survivors – and those who are still fighting – to join the Krewe of Hope.

Hope Floats is a free event for Survivors and their caregivers. Please feel free to spread the word to any survivor you know.

WHO: Cancer survivors (and those still fighting) and their guests. Patients are not required to have been treated at Ochsner.

WHEN: Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Free Adult Education classes welcoming new students on Friday!

Welcome to the Adult Education Program at Delgado Community College!

We are a free, open-enrollment program that offers a variety of classes designed to help students in New Orleans meet their academic, professional, and personal goals. Some of these goals include:

studying to earn a high school equivalency diploma (HiSET, formerly the GED)

improving English language skills in our English as a Second Language (ESL) courses

building digital literacy through Computer Basics, and more!

With classes available at six academic sites throughout the city and sections that meet in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings, most students are able to find a class schedule that works. And with nearly forty qualified instructors and tutors, the Adult Education Program is ready to help any students continue their education and career!
